Introduction

International Competitions in Physics started in 1967 and has become an annual prestigious event for higher secondary school science students and graduates, who have not joined any college. It is held every year in July. Delegates from 83 countries participated in the 37th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) held in Singapore in 2006. Six Noble Prize laureates come to meet and address the participants in Singapore. Asian countries started Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) from 2000. It is held every year in April.

Goal

The goal of the National Olympiad in Physics is (i) to spot young talents early, and (ii) to prepare a team for the Asian Physics Olympiad and International Physics Olympiad.

Participation in the international events
A country can participate in the International Physics Olympiad by sending a team of up to five pre-college students. Their age must be less than twenty years. The team is accompanied by a leader and a deputy leader. A few observers and several visitors may also be included in the country delegation. Students take part in the competition. The leader and the deputy leader have voting rights in the affairs of the Olympiad. The observers help the leaders in their work when needed. The number of participating students in the Asian Physics Olympiad is up to eight. The 38th IPhO is scheduled to be held in Isfahan of Iran from July 12 -20, 2007. The 8th APhO will be held in Sanghai, People’s Republic of China from April 21 – 29, 2007, preceding the IPhO events.
